Majella Catholic Primary School’s Intensive English Centre provides specialised English language support for eligible primary-aged students who are in the Beginning or Emerging phases of English language acquisition.
Students may attend Majella’s IEC while remaining connected with their referring or home school, with the aim of developing the English language proficiency needed to transition successfully into mainstream schooling.
Students may be eligible for placement in the Intensive English Centre if they are in the Beginning or Emerging phases of the EAL/D Progress Maps and are:
Majella’s Intensive English Centre supports eligible students from CEWA schools located within a 20 km radius of Majella Catholic Primary School, as well as eligible students enrolled at Majella.
Schools considering an IEC placement are encouraged to contact Majella Catholic Primary School in the first instance to discuss the student’s eligibility, individual needs and suitability for the program.
Referrals may be initiated by the student’s Principal, Assistant Principal or EAL/D Coordinator. With parent or caregiver consent, the referring school provides the family’s contact details and relevant information to Majella.
Schools can then complete the online IEC Referral Form:
Once a referral has been received, Majella’s IEC team will contact the family and arrange a visit and enrolment interview.
At the commencement of the student’s placement, IEC staff undertake assessment to establish the student’s current level of English language proficiency and identify individual learning needs. This information helps inform the student’s learning program and anticipated length of placement.
Student progress is monitored throughout their time in the IEC and formally reviewed each semester. Decisions about readiness to return to the student’s home school are based on the student’s English language development, learning needs and readiness to participate successfully in mainstream schooling.
Transition is carefully planned in partnership with the student, family and home school.
As a student approaches the end of their IEC placement, Majella’s IEC staff work with the home school to support a smooth and positive transition. As part of this process, IEC staff arrange a visit to the home school and accompany the student, helping them reconnect with their school environment and prepare for their return.
Our aim is for every student to leave the IEC feeling confident, supported and ready for the next stage of their learning.
