We celebrated NAIDOC and Refugee Weeks as well as Harmony Day with a range of activities across the school highlighting the importance of inclusivity and tolerance of all cultures and backgrounds in this country we call home.
Children learned the importance of the history of this land and it’s original custodians with a short research project on the current and past themes of NAIDOC Week and discovered the meaning behind the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. They explored the lyrics of some famous Aborignal music artists and the meaning and motivation behind them and learned about the six Noongar seasons of our region.
The activities became more hands-on with some fabulous African drumming lessons from the very talented Kofi Osei from Akwaaba. The children really found their rhythm and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There were a range of art activities from traditional Aboriginal dot paintings on rocks – and faces – as well as more exploration of the range of cultures we celebrate in Australia.
The afternoon culminated in some enjoyable physical activities – a range of games that children participated in with students from other year groups which highlighted the importance of working together in a team with a range of different people.
A fantastically enjoyable, informative and tiring day had by all!
